CakePHP 3.x - Schema, Mysql and LONGTEXT

Thomas von Hassel
I take it there is still no good way to express LONGTEXT type via the schema system ?

Re: CakePHP 3.x - Schema, Mysql and LONGTEXT

José Lorenzo
Do you really need to store 4GB of data in a field?

Thomas von Hassel
No, but sometimes, if you are dealing with a CMS and people store large blobs of html/css then TEXT can end up being be too small.

Re: CakePHP 3.x - Schema, Mysql and LONGTEXT

Madalin Ignisca
Why not Mediumtext that would suit larger text/html+css data, as Longtext and Blob is stored different in MySQL and would cause other situtations/problems after?

Isn't there still medium text?
Or is that the same issue then?

Re: CakePHP 3.x - Schema, Mysql and LONGTEXT

José Lorenzo
In reply to this post by Thomas von Hassel
In theory you can use whatever text type and cake will still work with it. The problem is at generating tables from fixtures, we don't support that type of column. Adding support for it is kind of trivial, actually, would be be able to help us adding it?

It is probably worth adding to 2.6.

Re: CakePHP 3.x - Schema, Mysql and LONGTEXT

OJ Tibi - @ojtibi
In reply to this post by Thomas von Hassel
Re-opening thread. Migration plugins for both versions 2 and 3 should support MEDIUMTEXT and LONGTEXT. The fact is, the developer should be the one responsible in determining if their data is compatible with their desired database engine, which means it shouldn't be a problem that these fields are MySQL/MariaDB specific.

For example, if the developer chooses to move their database to MSSQL or PostgreSQL, they are still responsible to do sanity checks on the actual data stored on the new engines, and update their Migration schemas accordingly.
